Maritime, Gastronomic, and Cultural Traditions of the Aveiro Region
The most complete tour of the Aveiro region.
Reserve two or three days for this exclusive route through the maritime, gastronomic, and cultural traditions of the region. Between boats, walks, lagoon fishing traditions, maritime traditions, and the associated gastronomy and devotion.
Day 1 - Aveiro, Ílhavo, and Águeda:
Visit to the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, the richest museum in the region dedicated to the sea and maritime and lagoon traditions.
Pass by Costa Nova do Prado, with a stop at the traditional market, don’t forget to take that photo with the striped houses. Regional lunch dedicated to codfish.
Visit to the Santo André Museum Ship, which once was part of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet and now aims to illustrate the dragnet fishing techniques. This classic trawler was built in 1948 in the Netherlands by order of the Aveiro Fishing Company. It was then a modern ship, measuring 71.40 meters in length and able to carry twenty thousand quintals of fish (1200 tons). In August 2001, the Santo André began a new phase of its life: to show future generations how cod trawler fishing was done and honor the memory of all its crew members during half a century of activity.
Pass by the codfish quay, where we will find the current fleet and old ships. A guided walk through the city of Aveiro. Let’s get hands-on with a sweet and divine workshop at the ovos moles factory in Aveiro.
Visit the salt marsh at the end of the day. To end the day, we’ll have some snacks or dinner.
Day 2 – Estarreja, Murtosa, and Ovar:
Let’s awaken our senses by starting the day with a walk or bicycle ride through BioRia, uncovering the secrets of the Lower Vouga Lagoon with wildlife and flora observation, and learning about the rice production in Salreu.
Visit to the Museum of the former Rice Husking Factory in Estarreja and observation of some urban art scattered around the city. Regional lunch dedicated to eel.
In Murtosa, we will take a Moliceiro boat ride (a unique boat in the world) and discover the Monte Branco Beach Shipyard Museum or the COMUR Museum (the Murtosa canning factory), as we are in the heart of the Ria de Aveiro, home to this beautiful boat.
In Ovar, we will stroll through the streets of this living museum of azulejos, do a workshop on the famous Ovar sponge cake, and of course, enjoy a sweet tasting.
