Eel Route

By land, by water, and at the table!
A grand tour through Murtosa. In this town known for its eel stew, we couldn’t miss a route dedicated to this famed delicacy: the Eel. We begin with traditional boatbuilding, visiting the Monte Branco beach shipyard museum to discover traditional vessels. We’ll participate in a small workshop on how to make a "galricho," the net/trap used to catch eels.
After learning about the net and the craft, we will board the traditional Moliceiro boat to accompany a fisherman who will retrieve the "galrichos" set during the previous tide. Engaging in conversation with the fisherman, we’ll uncover the secrets of this craft, documented as far back as the 13th century.
Once ashore, we’ll head to the restaurant, where peeled potatoes await us, ready to start the cooking process, which we’ll follow step by step.
Seated at the table, we will taste and savor the prepared eels, whether fried, in escabeche, or in stew.
With renewed energy, we will either walk or bike to the place where, since 1942, the women of Murtosa skillfully processed surplus eels: the Eel Factory, as the locals call the old COMUR (Murtosa Cannery), now transformed into a municipal museum. The cannery still operates today but in a different location.
After the visit, we will return to the starting point, concluding the eel route.
